Average Rating :

Rating : - Ink use makes this printer a complete ripoff
First, the good:

*The scanner works fine.
*Copy feature is easy to use.
*The ink does dry fast, and it does resist smudging and bleeding quite well.

Now, the bad:

*Ink, ink, ink! Just like dozens of people before me have said, this thing wastes ink. It uses color ink while printing black and white. If you go more than a few days without printing you have to clean the print heads and print test patterns (usually repeatedly), wasting more ink. It wastes ink every time you turn it on, even if you don't print anything. It goes through ink cartridges ridiculously fast when you do print. I've never gotten more than 1/4 of the stated capacity from the cartridges, and usually I only get a few dozen pages of text (or a few large photos) from a cartridge.

*If even ONE ink cartridge is out, the whole machine is a worthless hunk of plastic. Cyan out? Nope, you can't even print black text. Heck, you can't even scan a document! Even more than a decade ago I had HP inkjets that would use color ink to make composite black if I ran out of black ink. (Composite black it wasn't pretty, but if I had an urgent need to print something it would get me by until I could go buy more black ink.) And those inkjets would let you print in black and white or grayscale if you ran out of color ink. This printer functions in a completely opposite fashion! Instead of helping you get the job done, this printer tells you to take a hike until you give Epson more ink money.

*Black and white text printing is disappointing, even on the highest quality settings. My ancient HP (which worked for several years before failing) had better text quality. The text always has fine blank lines through it, even with a new ink cartridge and after repeated attempts to clean the print heads. The characters look ragged on close inspection. Unless you use the highest quality settings (more ink, more $$$!), the black characters look gray.

*Photo printing is mediocre, even on the recommended Epson paper. The colors are dull, making the photographs look faded. I've played around with the settings and made sure I was using a high-quality image, and I have yet to print a photo that was satisfactory. Again, my old HP did better photo printing.

*Paper handling is annoying. After all these years making printers, they can't figure out how to make paper easy to load and pass through the machine without jamming every few pages? Regardless of what the box says, I can't load more than about 15-20 pages at a time into the input tray or the printer won't feed paper at all without jamming or at least creasing the corners. Paper jams are annoying to clear, since a large section of the paper path is inaccessible. I often end up having to yank the paper out (complete with frightening noises that sound like the mechanism is stripping). I find myself cringing and crossing my fingers every time I start a print job, wondering if it will make it through without jamming. For a final insult, the output tray is extremely flimsy.

I could probably live with the other flaws (though I still wouldn't really like the printer), if the ink was not such a complete ripoff. Truly, this printer is little more than a scam for selling ink. This is my last Epson, and I am actively looking for a replacement.
